Art & Science: Two great tastes taste great together

nikon1992

What could this image be?  A sketchy Van Gogh rendering of a hayfield at dawn-light?  Perhaps?  A photograph of a 10-year old preparation of barbital, fenacetine, valium, and acetic acid?

Well, if you chose the latter then give yourself a gold star…

A photomicrography contest sponsored by Nikon compiles 35 years worth of stunning images of really really tiny things.  These images need to be seen to be believed.  Some could be timeless paintings by masters of the past century, reminiscent of Picasso, or Duchamp.  Others appear even more abstract and might give Rauschenberg or Klee a run for their money.

My only complaint is that the images aren’t high-res enough to steal and use as desktop wallpapers.

Please, click through to the Wired Science page and drool over the entire gallery, there are lots o’ pics.
