The CIA is reading your Facebook page. Do you care?

google_ciaThe investment branch of the CIA, In-Q-Tel, has just started pouring money into a Visible Technologies, a software firm the specializes in filtering the internet.  Visible provides customers with a feed of whats being said about….anything, online, right now.  Customers put in a few keywords and the web interface for Visible gives graphs, trends, and even data on who’s saying what.  We’re all ranked!  Based on how “influential” the software thinks we are.

Informal poll:

Does it matter to you if the US government is keeping tabs on you through online social media?

Lt me know your thoughts in the comments.

Is this news?  Or fear-mongering?  Is it not a foregone conclusion, given the open platform of the internet, that interested parties will be rifling through the inane detritus of our online ramblings searching for the next trend, fad, or flop?  Businesses have been doing this for a looong time.  Is the US government only now realizing the utility of our collective loquaciousness?

The wheels of democracy turn slowly i suppose.

In-Q-Tel says it wants Visible to keep track of foreign social media, and give spooks “early-warning detection on how issues are playing internationally,” …

Of course, such a tool can also be pointed inward, at domestic bloggers or tweeters. Visible already keeps tabs on web 2.0 sites for Dell, AT&T and Verizon. For Microsoft, the company is monitoring the buzz on its Windows 7 rollout. For Spam-maker Hormel, Visible is tracking animal-right activists’ online campaigns against the company.

So who here on the web doesn’t already know the maxim, “Don’t put anything online that you wouldn’t want your Grandmother to read.”?  (Hi gramma!)  Well, know we can say, “Don’t put anything online that you wouldn’t want the CIA to read.”  With that in mind, is anything different?  Well i for one say “this doesn’t change a thing.”

My main gripe is the passivity of the system, what’s the fun of reading all our posts if you aren’t going to contribute something, a comment, a “Like”.  The CIA will not just be a lurker.  They’ll be a leech.  And nobody likes a leech.

  • Nah. The CIA is welcome to know that today I made tomato sauce, submitted 3 job applications, and planted garlic….

  • The cat's out of the bag, and you can't put it back in. Information will be abused. I'd think the NSA (bigger and creepier than the CIA) would be more of a worry. Anyone with an actual terrorist plot knows how to be careful. It's probably more about discouraging us wussy dissidents.

  • What does it say about me that I don't know if my private life is worth keeping private….It doesn't seem all that interesting to me, but I'm not the government, a con artist, or a political mastermind so maybe I can't see it from the right perspective. Maybe this is a gentle reminder to get out of the FB sphere and into that other place, where you can drink beer in the park with your friends…

  • "at least SOMEBODY is reading my blog"

  • i am generally bumping throughout the internet just about all of the morning as a result I choose to peruse a good deal, which is not generally a beneficial matter as a large amount of the web sites I see are made up of worthless nonsense copied from various other websites a million times, but I have to compliment you because this website is in reality not bad at all and also possesses some unique information, so thanks for removing the phenomena of simply replicating other peoples’ blogs, in case you ever want to take up a couple of hands of zynga poker together with me just hit me up – you have my email 🙂

  • hi first class little blogging site you have here 😉 I work with the very same web theme on my own website yet for whatever weird cause it appears to stream better on this site although the one you have has more multimedia. Have you been making use of any specific plugins or widgets that quicken it up? If you might be able to display the plug ins so that I can use these on my webpage so twilight breaking dawn followers could watch twilight breaking dawn online trailers and videos more easily I’d be thankful – regards in advance 🙂

  • No recently listened tracks.
